Dr Carlo Luiu is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. His interdisciplinary work focuses on transport and mobility's intersection with health, environment, and social equity, particularly for vulnerable groups like older populations and residents of informal settlements. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (2019) from the University of Birmingham and prior degrees in Urban and Environmental Planning from Sapienza University of Rome and the University of Sassari.
Research interests include transport equity, air pollution mitigation, urban resilience, and citizen science. Current work includes the Air Pollution Citizen Science (APoCS) project, leveraging low-cost sensors and community collaboration to address air quality challenges in Europe and Africa. Past projects include studies on transport resilience in Kenyan informal settlements and pandemic recovery strategies in the West Midlands.
He is an Associate Member of the Centre for Urban Wellbeing and active in professional networks such as the British Society of Gerontology and the World Conference on Transport Research Society. His publications span journals like Journal of Transport and Health and International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, addressing topics from infrastructure impacts to equitable mobility solutions.
Advocacy and collaboration are central to his work, reflected in projects like the EUniWell APoCS initiative and contributions to global transport equity frameworks through the World Road Association. His research emphasizes translating technical findings into actionable policies for healthier, more sustainable urban environments.
