About
Dr. Bizan N. Balzer is a Group Leader and Habilitand at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg. He leads the Balzer Lab, a subgroup of the Single Molecule Spectroscopy group headed by Prof. Thorsten Hugel. His research focuses on nanotribology, single-molecule force spectroscopy, and biomaterials, particularly exploring friction mechanisms at molecular and macroscopic scales. He investigates adhesion, lubrication, and tribology in biological tissues and synthetic polymers using advanced techniques like AFM and fluorescence microscopy.
Key projects include studying osteoarthritis pathology through AFM-fluorescence hybrid approaches, programmable friction materials, and mucin-based lubrication. He collaborates extensively with livMatS (Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems), focusing on hydrogel-driven adaptivity and triboelectric materials.
His lab develops functionalized AFM cantilever tips for single-molecule studies and explores applications in biolubrication, such as mucin coatings and corneal contact lenses. Recent work includes analyzing von Willebrand factor unfolding, nanoporous block copolymer membranes, and carbon nanoparticle effects on mucin hydrogels.
Dr. Balzer supervises postdoctoral researchers like Dr. Nisha Ranjan and collaborates with institutions across Germany and Europe. His laboratory is part of the Freiburg Materials Research Center (FMF), emphasizing interdisciplinary materials research.
