About
Dr. Bill Baldwin is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University, part of the College of Science. He holds a PhD in Toxicology from North Carolina State University and a BS in Biology from Central Michigan University. His research focuses on environmental toxicants' effects on lipid metabolism, particularly PFAS compounds like PFOS. He serves as a Faculty Fellow in the Graduate Center for Transformational Mentorship (GCTM) and reviews for NIH, NSF, and international agencies like OECD and NERC. Baldwin has over 75 publications, with 40+ since 2010, and actively engages in STEM outreach.
Research Interests: Dr. Baldwin investigates how environmental contaminants disrupt lipid metabolism pathways, including PPAR, CAR, and PXR receptors. His lab studies PFOS-induced obesity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chemical mixtures' effects on metabolic diseases. Key areas include oxylipin metabolism, CYP enzyme regulation, and endocrine disruption.
- Lab Locations: Jordan Hall 318 (Lab) and Long Hall 235 (Office)
- Memberships: Society of Toxicology, SETAC, AAAS
- Courses Taught: Mechanistic Toxicology, Endocrinology, General Biology
Advising & Grants: Mentors four graduate and undergraduate students researching PFAS toxicity, chemical mixtures, and metabolic disease mechanisms. Collaborates on NIH/NSF-funded studies and OECD testing frameworks.
Labs/Teams: Directs research on PFAS-induced metabolic disorders and xenobiotic response pathways using mouse and Daphnia models. His team integrates lipidomics, transcriptomics, and in vivo toxicology approaches.
