Bi-Yu Chang serves as Deputy Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies and holds the position of Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS University of London. She is affiliated with the Department of Politics and International Studies, contributing to research and teaching focused on Taiwan's cultural and political dynamics.
Dr. Chang’s educational background includes a BA from Chengchi University and an MA and PhD from City University (City). These qualifications have provided her with a strong foundation in political and cultural studies.
Her research interests revolve around identity politics, particularly the spatial dimensions of identity formation in Taiwan. She explores how geography education, cartographic representation, and tourism politics influence national imagination and power dynamics. More recent work addresses generational gaps in Taiwanese identity and the intersection with gender politics. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates cultural geography, colonial history, and political analysis to understand Taiwan’s evolving cultural and political landscape.
Bi-Yu has received significant recognition, including the prestigious Taiwan Fellowship in both 2016 and 2019, and the SOAS Director’s Teaching Award in 2019, reflecting her contributions to research and pedagogy.
