Ashley Muddiman

Ashley Muddiman is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas and serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Political Communication from the University of Texas at Austin.

Research Interests: Dr. Muddiman's research focuses on political incivility in public discourse, particularly in online environments. She examines citizens' perceptions of incivility, the effects of uncivil discourse in digital news spaces, and strategies for fostering productive conversations. Her work also explores journalist interventions in comment sections and the impact of clickbait headlines.

Professional Activities: As Director of Graduate Studies, she leads the graduate program in Communication Studies. She teaches courses in political communication, mass media, and research methods. Additionally, she is a faculty research associate with the Center for Media Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin.
