Ashley Hurst

Ashley Robin Hurst, JD, M.Div, MA is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She teaches clinical and legal ethics to nursing and interdisciplinary students.

Background: Former employment discrimination attorney (partner level) who transitioned to healthcare ethics. Holds degrees in law (JD), divinity (M.Div), and religious ethics (MA). Completed clinical ethics fellowship at UVA School of Medicine.

Research Focus:

• Preventative ethics systems design
• Moral distress in healthcare
• Narrative ethics approaches
• Ethical issues in correctional healthcare

Publications: Author of bioethics articles and co-author of 'Bioethics and the Law' textbook (5th ed, 2024). Work addresses moral distress, prison healthcare ethics, neonatal ethics, and narrative approaches.
