Andy Meneely

Andy Meneely is an Associate Professor in the Department of Software Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), part of the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. He also serves as an extended faculty member in the Department of Cybersecurity. His research focuses on software security, empirical software engineering, socio-technical factors in development, and software metrics. Dr. Meneely earned his BA from Calvin College (Computer Science & Mathematics) and his PhD in Computer Science from North Carolina State University under Laurie Williams. His doctoral work examined the relationship between developer collaboration and software security using social network analysis.

Research Interests: Dr. Meneely’s work emphasizes applying data-driven methods to improve software security practices. Key areas include vulnerability prediction, code review metrics, and the socio-technical dynamics of open-source projects. He has developed educational activities like the “Insider Threat Activity” to train students in identifying security risks. His research has led to influential papers on vulnerability analysis in projects like Chromium and Apache HTTP Server.

Awards: Notable achievements include the ACM Distinguished Paper Award (MSR 2015) and the MSR 2015 Best Paper Award for work on Chromium vulnerabilities. His contributions to curriculum development, such as integrating security principles into web engineering courses, have been widely recognized.

Teaching: He currently teaches courses including Engineering Secure Software (SWEN-331) and Web-Based Software Systems (SWEN-344), emphasizing practical, project-driven learning. His role as Undergraduate Program Director reflects his commitment to shaping RIT’s software engineering curriculum.
