Andrew James

Andrew James is a Professor of Innovation Management & Policy at The University of Manchester, affiliated with the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) and the IMP Innovation, Strategy and Sustainability department within Alliance Manchester Business School. His research focuses on corporate technology strategy, innovation management, science and technology policy, digitalization/AI adoption challenges, supply chain resilience, and defense/security sector dynamics. His work has been supported by UK Research and Innovation (ESRC/EPSRC) and international organizations.

Teaching includes innovation management on undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs. He directs the MSc in Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship and coordinates courses on technology strategy and consultancy projects. His executive education offerings cover innovation, AI, and intellectual property management.

Key research themes include geopolitics of supply chains, UK-China tech collaborations, defense procurement innovation, and behavioral factors in digital transformation. Recent work addresses research security policies and lawtech adoption in legal professions.

He has led impactful projects including EU research security analysis and law society-commissioned tech adoption studies. Supervision focuses on qualitative and mixed-methods approaches in innovation-related topics, with a strong emphasis on doctoral candidate preparedness and research alignment.
