Andrew J. Gordon

Andrew J. Gordon is a retired Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Houston (UH), affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and an M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health.

His research focuses on Medical and Applied Anthropology, Urban Environments, Globalization, and Alcohol/Drug Studies across Latin America, West Africa, and U.S. Cities. Recent work includes studies on Rastafarians in Belize, diabetes cultural expressions, and Fulani asylum issues. He has directed ethnographic field schools in Belize for UH students and conducted fieldwork in Guinea on healthcare practices.

Selected publications include Agents of Change in Bullet Tree Falls (2017) and articles on globalization impacts in Belize, ethnic substance abuse, and cooperative economics. His applied work addresses voter participation and asylum advocacy for marginalized groups.

Dr. Gordon’s research integrates schema theory, neuroplasticity, and addiction studies to explore health disparities. He maintains ties to international communities through collaborative studies and policy engagement.
