About
Amy Winters is an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology's Industrial Design Department, affiliated with the EAISI High Tech Systems and Interactive Matters research groups. Her work bridges interaction design, soft robotics, and materials science, focusing on Material Programming and temporal material behaviors. She holds a BA in Design for Performance from Central Saint Martins and a PhD in Textiles from the Royal College of Art, with a PostDoc at TU/e.
Her research explores how programmable materials like liquid crystal elastomers and biofilm actuators can create interactive systems with dynamic, time-based behaviors. Drawing on concepts from performance arts and media, she investigates material aesthetics through principles like 'temporal form' and 'tension-and-release.'
Winters collaborates across disciplines, co-founding the Material Aesthetics Lab and leading initiatives at IEEE RO-MAN and Dutch Design Week. Her pedagogical work includes directing the 'Soft Systems' MA pathway and promoting sustainable interaction design practices.
