Eindhoven University of TechnologyAbout
Erik Homburg is a part-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), affiliated with the Microsystems research group and the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center. His work focuses on microsystem design, combining sensing, actuation, microfluidics, and active materials. He plays a key role in the Microfablab, specializing in prototyping with laser machining and multi-material printing.
- Education: MSc in Mechanical Engineering (1980) from TU/e
- Research: Microfabrication, vascular tissue engineering, adaptive systems
Dr. Homburg's research develops microfluidic devices for vascular modeling and organ-on-a-chip systems, enabling live imaging of biological processes. His recent publications highlight innovations in 3D sugar printing for perfusable vascular networks and piezoelectric actuator calibration in adaptive systems. Collaborations span biomedical and mechanical engineering domains.
The Microfablab at TU/e serves as the nexus for his educational and research activities. While no explicit awards are listed, his work receives funding from prestigious Dutch organizations including the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and the Dutch Heart Foundation. He currently works two days per week at TU/e.
