Amanda Rivas is a Professor of Practice of Law and Director of the Externship Program at St. Mary's University School of Law. She oversees the Externship program, which facilitates semester-long experiential learning opportunities for law students. As Director, she collaborates with supervising attorneys, coordinates CLE workshops on supervision ethics, and expands community partnerships to enhance student opportunities. Previously, she served as Associate Director since the program's launch in 2011.
Her career began with a clinical fellowship at her alma mater, where she co-taught seminars, supervised students, and managed the Pro Bono and Border Outreach Programs. Before law school, she taught middle school in the Rio Grande Valley through Teach For America, and currently advises the San Antonio chapter.
Rivas' research and presentations focus on legal education, mentorship strategies, and program development. She has lectured on topics like millennial supervision, externship coordination, and legal liability for mental health professionals. Her work bridges academic training with real-world legal practice through experiential learning initiatives.
She earned her J.D. from St. Mary's University School of Law (2009) and B.A. from Brandeis University (2003). She is licensed to practice law in Texas.
