Amy L. Sankaran

Amy L. Sankaran is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the Externship and Pro Bono Programs at the University of Michigan Law School. She oversees full-time externships in South Africa and India, launched the part-time externship program in 2011, and manages pro bono initiatives connecting students with law firms and organizations.

Sankaran's career spans public interest law, legal education, and pro bono advocacy. Her work focuses on child advocacy, domestic violence, and experiential learning through externships and the Immigrant Justice Lab. She previously practiced litigation at Skadden, Arps and worked as an adoption attorney before returning to Michigan Law in roles ranging from admissions to career advising.

She clerked at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan under Judge Arthur J. Tarnow and remains active in pro bono legal practice. Her contributions include launching the Pro Bono Pledge in 2009 and expanding global externship opportunities.
