Allison Emmerson

Allison Emmerson is an Associate Professor and Graduate Studies Director in the Department of Classical Studies at Tulane University. She holds a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Cincinnati (2013), an M.A. from the same institution (2007), and a B.A. in Latin and Classical Civilizations from Denison University (2004, Summa cum Laude).

Her research focuses on Roman urbanism, particularly the social and spatial dynamics of city margins, waste management systems, and the role of marginalized groups (e.g., women, enslaved individuals, and subelites) in ancient urban life. She directs the 'Pompeii I.14 Project,' examining pre-79 CE urban development and civic infrastructure. Key publications include Life and Death in the Roman Suburb (Oxford, 2020), awarded the Archaeological Institute of America’s Wiseman Prize (2022), and an upcoming monograph on Pompeii’s Porta Stabia neighborhood.

Emmerson’s work integrates field research with critical analysis of social exclusion in antiquity. Current projects include excavations at Isthmia, Greece, and investigations into the archaeology of Roman suburban spaces. She holds prestigious fellowships from the American Academy in Rome and the ACLS.
