Alice Pell

Alice Pell is an International Professor and Professor Emerita of Animal Nutrition in the Department of Global Development at Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She also holds an adjunct professorship in Global Development and serves as Dean’s Advisor for Global Livestock Health and Development in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Her work spans international development, education, and agriculture, with a focus on integrating agriculture and nutrition to address global food security challenges.

Education:

• B.A. cum laude in Architectural Science from Harvard University
• M.A. in International Education from Harvard University
• M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from the University of Vermont

Research Interests: Pell’s research explores the intersection of agriculture, nutrition, and international development. She has led interdisciplinary projects in Kenya, Afghanistan, and Latin America, including a NSF-funded study on poverty and environmental degradation in the Kenyan highlands and the Rockefeller Foundation-funded African Food Security Training Program. Her work emphasizes sustainable agriculture, rural development, and policy interventions to combat both undernutrition and overnutrition.

Advising & Leadership: Pell served as Cornell’s Vice Provost for International Relations (2008–2013) and directed the International Institute for Food and Agricultural Development (CIIFAD). She currently chairs the Academic Committee of Zamorano University’s Board of Trustees and teaches at the African Doctoral Academy. Her global collaborations include roles at South African universities and leadership in Pan-American agricultural education initiatives.

Labs & Teams: Pell’s work involves partnerships with universities in Africa and Latin America, focusing on experiential learning models and doctoral education. She oversees interdisciplinary teams in field research, policy analysis, and capacity-building programs across multiple continents.
