Alexandra Popst

Dr. Alexandra Popst is a Scientific Associate and Researcher in Medieval History at the Department of History, University of Munich (LMU Munich). She serves as Program Coordinator for the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (since 2025) and Erasmus Coordinator for the Department of Medieval History (2021–2024).

• Doctorate in Medieval History (supervised by PD Dr. Tobias Daniels, Prof. Dr. Julia Burkhardt, and Prof. Dr. Mark Hengerer)
• Head of the study office and administration of in-house funding since 2021
• MA in Medieval History (LMU Munich, 2018)
• BA in History and Scandinavian Studies (LMU Munich, Universitetet i Bergen, 2014–2018)

Her research focuses on transcultural medieval burial practices, particularly the 12th-century funerary cathedrals of Cefalù, Monreale, and Palermo. She challenges interpretations linking Sicilian burial culture to imperial models like Speyer and Aachen, emphasizing their distinct Sicilian character and serial development. Methodologically, she combines written source analysis with iconographic and ritual-theoretical frameworks.

Dr. Popst contributes to academic administration and project management, including roles in the GeschichtePLUS initiative and international coordination efforts via her Erasmus responsibilities.
