About
Cynthia Stöckle is a Research Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich) in the Department of Medieval History. Since April 2025, she has served as a Research Associate in the third-party funded project "Beyond Borders – Cross-Epoch Perspectives for History Studies", supported by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education. Her doctoral research under Prof. Dr. Julia Burkhardt focuses on medieval monasteries in the tension between monastic claims and dynastic politics. She also contributes to academic networks like the Medieval Central Europe Research Network (MECERN) and participates in interdisciplinary projects.
- MA in History, LMU Munich (2020)
- BA in History/German Philology, Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg (2017)
Her research interests center on comparative religious history, comparative regional history, and medieval foundation practices, particularly analyzing monastic autonomy amid dynastic influence. She examines institutions like Stams, Fürstenfeld, and Tulln from the 13th to 14th centuries, seeking to redefine terminology around "house monasteries" and "dynastic burial sites." Her work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including spatial analysis and network theory.
Stöckle has received a doctoral scholarship from the Episcopal Study Fund (Cusanuswerk) since 2022. She has taught introductory courses such as "Poor but Sexy? The Cistercian Order in Bavaria" and served as a tutor in medieval history. Her publications include collaborative conference reports on topics like pilgrimage dynamics, monastic innovation, and regional interconnections.
- Member of the Association of German Historians (VHD)
