About
Dr. Stephan Faust serves as Curator and Scientific Director of the Archaeological Museum at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 2019, and as Erasmus coordinator for archaeology since 2020. Previously, he held academic positions including W1 Professor (Junior Professor) for Classical Archaeology at the University of Hamburg (2010-2016), Departmental Lecturer at Oxford (2017), and Lecturer at University College Cork (2018).
His educational background includes:
- Studies in Classical Archaeology, Greek Philology, and Latin Philology (1999-2005) at Münster, Oxford (Lincoln College), and LMU Munich
- Master of Arts (2005) from LMU Munich on reliefs from Leptis Magna
- Doctorate (2009) from LMU Munich on Roman Imperial battle paintings
Dr. Faust's research spans iconography, funerary culture, settlement history, and collection history, with particular focus on material and visual culture of late antiquity. His work examines intersections of art, power, and ritual in Roman/Greek contexts, notably through excavation of early Greek settlements and analysis of imperial monuments. He has made significant contributions to understanding sepulchral iconography and cultural memory in antiquity.
Recent publications (2017-2025) reveal consistent focus on Roman imperial art, especially power representation in monuments like Trajan's Column and the Altar of Peace. His fieldwork at Pithekoussai (Ischia) since 2016 demonstrates commitment to Mediterranean archaeology, while editorial work on cult images bridges museum studies with religious history. The publications show methodological diversity combining archaeological evidence with art historical and socio-political analysis.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Senior Fellowship at Research College 'Dialogue Cultures' (Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, 2021)
As excavation director for the Pithekoussai project (with Nadin Burkhardt) since 2016, Dr. Faust leads international field research on the earliest Greek settlement in the West. His Erasmus coordination facilitates academic exchanges, and museum directorship involves curatorial oversight of collections. Research has been supported through university appointments and the 2021 Senior Fellowship.
He directs the Archaeological Museum of MLU Halle-Wittenberg, managing collections and exhibitions, while co-leading the Pithekoussai excavation team on Ischia. This dual role integrates museum scholarship with active field research, maintaining connections with international institutions like Oxford and Cork.
