Alex Cushing

Alex Cushing is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion and Classics, joining in autumn 2023. His research focuses on Roman social history, slavery, and manumission, employing papyri, inscriptions, and literary sources. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (2020), where his dissertation explored economic relationships among freedpersons post-manumission.

Research Interests include Roman epigraphy, papyrology, and the socio-economic dynamics of enslavement. He is currently developing a monograph analyzing motivations behind Roman manumission practices from both enslavers' and enslaved perspectives.

Teaching includes courses on Ancient Mediterranean history, Roman and Greek history, and ancient literature. He has prior teaching experience at the University of Toronto, Carleton University, and Loyola University Maryland.

His forthcoming work includes two scholarly chapters on euphemization and affective language used by enslavers in discussing labor practices. No scientific awards are explicitly mentioned in the text.
