About
Alberto Gianfreda is a Professor in the Sculpture Department at Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, teaching core courses including Sculpture Techniques I, Sculpture Techniques II, and Forming, Technology and Typology of Materials. His academic career spans institutions including Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Florence, and Carrara since 2005.
His research focuses on the intersection of material anthropology and contemporary sculpture, exploring technical processes as expressive experiences. Gianfreda investigates how materials' physical and symbolic characteristics transform through traditional and cutting-edge techniques, examining applications in diverse contexts from public installations to private spaces. His methodology emphasizes the threshold between technical execution and design conception.
Since 2018, Gianfreda has coordinated the experimental research project 'Reading the Territory with Art' in collaboration with MAC Lissone, developing methodologies for integrating art into urban planning processes. This work is documented at www.leggereilterritorio.com and manifests in public sculptures like the 'Tavola di Condividi' at Palazzo Lombardia, Milan, and liturgical renovations such as Venice's Tolenti Church.
Gianfreda's artistic practice includes significant international exhibitions including the Istanbul Biennial (2011), Shenzhen Biennial (2018), Jingdezhen Biennial (2021), and solo shows at the Estorick Collection (London, 2018) and Slovenian National Museum (2023). His educational background includes a sculpture degree from Brera Academy (2003), specialization in Sacred Arts and Anthropology (2005), and training at TAM under Nunzio Di Stefano.
