Professor Alan Strathern is a Tutorial Fellow in History at Brasenose College and Professor of Global History at the University of Oxford. He holds additional roles as Lecturer at St. John's College and is affiliated with the Oxford Centre for Global History. His academic background includes degrees from Oxford, London, and extensive research fellowships.
Education: BA, MA, DPhil (Oxford); MA (London).
Research Interests: Focuses on global religious change, political authority, and early modern history with specializations in Sri Lanka and comparative studies across Asia and Europe. Key themes include sacred kingship, ethnic identity, and the interaction between religion and politics.
Publications: Notable works include Converting Rulers (2024), Unearthly Powers (2019, Bentley Prize winner), and Kingship and Conversion (2007). His interdisciplinary approach integrates history, anthropology, and sociology.
Awards: Recipient of the World History Association Bentley Book Prize (2020) for Unearthly Powers.
