Dr. Georgy Kantor is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at the University of Oxford, and an Official Fellow and Tutor in Ancient History at St John's College. He also serves as Keeper of the College Pictures at St John's College. His academic journey includes degrees from the Russian State University for the Humanities (MA) and Oxford (MA, MPhil, DPhil).
His research focuses on Roman legal and institutional history, particularly in Asia Minor and the Black Sea region, with expertise in Roman epigraphy and comparative legal history. He is preparing a monograph on Law in Roman Asia Minor (133 BC–AD 212) and has co-edited Legalism: Property and Ownership (Oxford UP, 2017).
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate Roman history tutorials, lectures on Roman inscriptions, and a faculty class on the Greek City in the Roman World. He actively supervises DPhil/Master’s students on topics like Roman law in Asia Minor and socio-legal dynamics in Hellenistic cities. He also serves as an associate editor of Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum and blogs at georgykantorblog.wordpress.com.
