Alan Pepper is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas A&M University. He joined the department in 1995 and holds affiliate roles in the Core Faculty of the Doctoral Degree Program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), Faculty of Genetics, and Faculty of Molecular and Environmental Plant Sciences. His research focuses on plant adaptation to extreme environments using genetic, genomic, and molecular tools.
Education: A.B. in Biochemistry (1982, University of California, Berkeley); Ph.D. in Genetics (1990, University of California, Davis); Postdoctoral research at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA.
Research interests include plant adaptation to stresses like drought, mineral deficiencies, light conditions, and heavy metals, with key study organisms such as Caulanthus amplexicaulis and cotton (Gossypium spp.). His work explores conservation genetics of rare plants and the evolution of extremophiles. Recent publications highlight genomic analysis of cotton domestication and genetic connectivity in endangered plant populations.
Publications span plant genomics, ecological genetics, and conservation biology, with contributions to journals like Genome Biology and Evolution, PLoS ONE, and BMC Plant Biology.
