Özgür B. Akan serves as Professor of Electronic and Communication Engineering in the Academic Division of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where he leads the Internet of Everything (IoE) Group dedicated to advancing interconnected systems from molecular sensors to large-scale networks.
His research spans interdisciplinary domains including Intrabody communications, Internet of Bio-Nano Things, Energy Harvesting systems, Energy/Spectrum Efficient Communications, 5G/6G Internet of Things, Internet of Vehicles, and Internet of Space. This work focuses on overcoming fundamental challenges in connectivity, miniaturization, and energy efficiency to enable novel sensing and control mechanisms at unprecedented scales.
Professor Akan directs several major research initiatives funded through competitive grants:
- MI-FI: Micro/Nanoscale Transceivers for Wireless Molecular Information Communications
- MINERVA: Communication Theoretical Foundations of Nervous System
- Towards Bio-Inspired Nanonetworks and ICT-Inspired Neuro-Treatment
- MINERGRACE: Graphene-based High Resolution Neural Interfaces
These projects address critical gaps in spectrum utilization, neural interface technologies, and nanoscale communication paradigms within the Internet of Everything framework.
