Ömür Koç is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art Education at the Faculty of Education, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. With a distinguished career spanning several decades, Professor Koç specializes in Turkish miniature art, illumination techniques, and Ottoman artistic traditions. Her academic journey began at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Higher Decorative Arts, followed by a doctorate from Dokuz Eylül University's Institute of Social Sciences focusing on Illumination and Miniature.
Professor Koç's research interests center on Turkish miniature art, Islamic book arts, Ottoman decorative traditions, and the cultural heritage of the Menteşe region. Her scholarly work explores historical narratives through miniature art, particularly focusing on the Rhodes Campaign, Menteşe Sanjak, and religious figures like Erzurumlu İbrahim Hakkı and Ahmed Yesevi. She has made significant contributions to understanding the Westernization period's impact on Turkish art, especially in the Muğla region.
Her extensive publication record includes numerous articles in national and international journals, with a particular emphasis on miniature narratives related to Ottoman history and cultural heritage. Professor Koç's artistic output demonstrates a consistent thematic focus on historical documentation through miniature art, with recurring interests in Menteşe Sanjak's architectural heritage, Ottoman military campaigns (particularly the Rhodes expedition), and the representation of religious figures and traditions.
Among her notable achievements are the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman's Rhodes Campaign Miniature Success Award (2017) and recognition from the Academy of Arts of Uzbekistan (2000). She has also received multiple awards from the Turkish Ministry of Culture for her contributions to Turkish decorative arts.
Professor Koç has supervised numerous master's theses on diverse topics including children's art education, Turkish painting traditions, ceramic art, and regional cultural heritage. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Turkish mythology, art history, miniature art, and Turkish-Islamic book arts, reflecting her comprehensive expertise in Turkish artistic traditions.
