Éric Montpetit is a Full Professor at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, University of Montreal. He also serves as Vice-Dean of the Faculty and holds affiliations with multiple research centers, including the Centre de recherche sur les politiques et le développement social (CPDS), the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST), and the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales (CÉRIUM).
- Education: PhD in Comparative Public Policies and Canadian Politics, McMaster University (1999).
His research examines how scientific expertise influences public policy in contentious domains like climate change, biotechnology, shale gas, wind energy, and public health across North America and Europe. He investigates policy formulation dynamics, the role of interest groups, public administration, and conflicts in decision-making processes. Current projects include "Le confinement: étude comparée du choix d'un instrument de politique publique extrême" (2021-2027), focusing on extreme policy instruments during pandemics, and international collaborations on scientific advisory systems.
Scientific Awards:
- Lynton Keith Caldwell Award (2006) for Misplaced Distrust, recognizing the best book on environmental policy by the American Political Science Association.
Advisory Roles and Grants: Montpetit is an advisor to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and has secured grants from SSHRC/CRSH, FQRSC, and industry partners like Servier Canada. He has directed over a dozen PhD and Master’s theses on topics ranging from intergovernmental relations to deliberative decision-making in governance.
