Élvio Rúbio Gouveia serves as Assistant Professor at the University of Madeira within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Department of Physical Education and Sports. He holds leadership roles as Vice-President of the Institute of Interactive Technologies (Robotics and Engineering Systems Laboratory) and Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, while maintaining a collaborative affiliation with the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Gerontology and Vulnerability (CIGEV) at the University of Geneva.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Sports Science (2011), Master's in Physical Education and Sports (2007), and Bachelor's in Physical Education and Sports (2003), all obtained from the University of Madeira.
Gouveia's research centers on multidisciplinary approaches to promote physical activity, fitness, and quality of life across the lifespan, with primary emphasis on healthy aging interventions. His recent work expands into Sports Performance Optimization and Applied Technologies through three specialized avenues: physiological response monitoring during training/competition, development of rehabilitation technologies, and pedagogical innovations using Small-Sided Games in exercise training.
Analysis of his 2022-2024 publications reveals dominant themes in youth soccer biomechanics, cognitive-physical health interrelationships in aging populations, and technological applications in sports science. His work consistently bridges laboratory research with community-based interventions across diverse age groups.
He has supervised two doctoral theses in the past five years while currently co-supervising six, and has guided over 40 master's theses. As principal investigator, he secured three major grants and participated in five additional funded projects, personally selecting more than 30 research grant recipients.
Gouveia leads critical initiatives within the Robotics and Engineering Systems Laboratory and contributes to international gerontology research through CIGEV, focusing on vulnerability assessment and intervention development for aging populations.
