Glenn Downing is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin, College of Natural Sciences. He teaches courses including CS 371p: Object-Oriented Programming and CS 104c: Competitive Programming. Downing serves as faculty advisor for the UT Programming Contest (UTPC) team and has guided the team to notable successes including a 15th place finish in North America at the ICPC World Finals. His educational background includes: Ph.D. program in CS at The University of Texas at Austin (1982-83) Ph.D. program in Aero/Astro at Stanford University (1977-78) M.S. in Aero/Astro at M.I.T. (1975-77) B.S. in Physics at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1973-75) Studies at Purdue University (1970-72) Downing's research focuses on Programming Languages and Compilers , with specific interests in Object-Oriented Programming and Software Engineering . His work explores language design, compilation techniques, and software development methodologies that enhance programmer productivity and software reliability. He has made contributions to understanding initialization patterns in object-oriented systems and data sharing mechanisms in scientific computing environments. His publication record shows a consistent focus on practical aspects of programming language implementation and software engineering, evolving from foundational research on object initialization techniques in the 1990s toward more applied scientific computing challenges in the 2000s. 2020 - College of Natural Sciences Teaching Excellence Award 2018 - Nominated for Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards 2013 - College of Natural Sciences Golden Apple Teaching Excellence Award 2006 - College of Natural Sciences Foundation Advisory Council Awards 2002 - College of Natural Sciences Teaching Excellence Award As faculty advisor for the UT Programming Contest team, Downing has cultivated student success in international programming competitions. His teaching excellence has been consistently recognized through multiple awards from the College of Natural Sciences spanning two decades. He has developed comprehensive curriculum for competitive programming and object-oriented design courses that emphasize practical implementation skills. Downing maintains active involvement with the UT Programming Team and Competitive Programming Club, providing mentorship that has resulted in multiple regional championship victories and strong showings at international competitions including the ICPC World Finals.
