Dr. Laura Barrett is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Loughborough University, affiliated with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. She holds a BSc in Physical Education, Sports Science, and Chemistry from Loughborough University and a PhD in Exercise Physiology (2004). Her career includes roles as a Research Associate at Loughborough University (2004–2005), Research Fellow at Exeter University’s Children’s Health and Exercise Research Centre (2005–2007), and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Loughborough since 2007. Her research focuses on the physiological impacts of exercise, particularly in adolescents and young adults. Key areas include postprandial metabolism, cardiometabolic health, and the development of real-time opto-physiological monitoring technologies. She investigates how physical activity interventions in schools and sports settings can mitigate metabolic risks, such as postprandial lipemia and impaired endothelial function. Education: BSc Physical Education, Sports Science & Chemistry (Loughborough University) PhD Exercise Physiology (Loughborough University, 2004) Her publications emphasize innovations in wearable sensors for real-time physiological monitoring, with applications in sports medicine and public health. She has explored the efficacy of school-based physical activity programs and the role of exercise in modulating postprandial responses. Current research trends include optimizing sensor accuracy during motion and integrating machine learning for signal processing. Barrett’s work bridges clinical, technological, and applied exercise science, contributing to advancements in both academic and practical healthcare contexts.
