Mari (Kauyumari) Sanchez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Cal Poly Humboldt. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from California State University, Fresno (Magna Cum Laude), and a Ph.D. and M.A. in Cognitive Psychology from the University of California, Riverside. She completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour at the University of Canterbury. Her research focuses on speech perception, production, memory, and the role of social factors in speech changes. She emphasizes active learning, critical thinking, and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into her teaching. Dr. Sanchez’s academic achievements include being a NIMH-COR Honors Scholar, McNair Scholar, and Psychology Honors Scholar. She leads the Cognition Lab at Cal Poly Humboldt, located in the Behavioral & Social Sciences building. Her work bridges cognitive psychology with sociolinguistic influences, examining how visual and auditory cues shape speech processing and alignment. Recent publications highlight cross-modal interactions, phonotactic effects, and contextual influences on speech production.
