Sian Curtis, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health. She also serves as a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center. Her academic leadership includes directing the MCH doctoral program since 2022 and co-chairing the Gillings School's Conflict of Interest Committee since 2019. Dr. Curtis holds a PhD in Social Statistics from the University of Southampton (1992), following an MSc in Statistics (1989) and BSc in Mathematics (1987), all from the same institution. Her research focuses on contraceptive use dynamics, global reproductive health, maternal health program evaluation, and statistical demography. Her key research activities include analyzing family planning service integration in Nigeria, investigating menstrual cycle side effects of contraceptives in West Africa, and studying healthcare provider motivation in Kenya. She has led USAID-funded evaluations of maternal health programs in Bangladesh and contributed to landmark studies on obstetric fistula prevalence in Bangladesh and neonatal mortality drivers in South Asia. Awards include the 2018 International AIDS Society TB/HIV Research Award and the 1995 President's Award for Excellence from Macro International. Her work appears in top journals like BMC Reproductive Health , PLoS ONE , and Human Resources for Health . Dr. Curtis advises on global health initiatives including the $90M PEARL project supporting evidence-based public health programming. Her practice activities include organizing Population Association of America sessions and providing technical assistance for USAID's maternal health impact evaluations in Bangladesh. Her research extends to India's ASHA health worker program evaluation, Uganda's abortion care policies, and innovative social support models for tuberculosis treatment adherence in Ukraine. She has pioneered methodological advancements in measuring maternal mortality through verbal autopsy studies in multiple countries.
