Bruce O'Neill is a Professor and Undergraduate Director in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Saint Louis University's College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University, specializing in social and cultural anthropology with a focus on urban dynamics in post-socialist Eastern Europe, particularly Romania. His research explores themes such as urban poverty, boredom as a social phenomenon, post-communist spatial politics, and the interplay between infrastructure and identity. Key research interests include the anthropology of Bucharest, post-socialist urban transformation, material culture, and existential themes in marginalized communities. Notable works analyze the 'underground' urban spaces of Bucharest, exploring how infrastructure and public life shape social hierarchies and subjective experiences. Publications span over two decades, with recent works focusing on infrastructure critiques, digital urban spaces, and boredom as a lens for understanding post-socialist stagnation. His ethnographic methods emphasize long-term engagement with communities, particularly in Eastern Europe. Dr. O'Neill's work bridges urban anthropology with philosophical inquiry, offering critical perspectives on globalization, inequality, and the politics of urban marginalization. He has also contributed reviews on migration, humanitarian crises, and the anthropology of justice systems in St. Louis.
