David Gfeller is an Associate Professor at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine and the Department of Oncology, as well as the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Lausanne Branch. He leads a research group at the intersection of computational biology and oncology. David Gfeller earned his PhD in theoretical physics from EPFL, supervised by Prof. Paolo De Los Rios, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto with Prof. Gary Bader and at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) with EMBO support. He began his independent career at UNIL in 2014 as an assistant professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. His research focuses on computational approaches to cancer immunology, particularly in predicting immune recognition of tumors through peptide-MHC interactions and analyzing single-cell RNA sequencing data to decipher the tumor microenvironment. His group has developed AI-driven algorithms now used clinically for personalized cancer vaccine development. His publications span leading journals such as Nature Biotechnology , PNAS , eLife , and Genome Research . The work consistently emphasizes machine learning, data integration, and translational applications in immuno-oncology. EPFL Best Thesis Award EMBO Fellowship (2010) EMBO Fellowship (2013) David Gfeller is actively involved in teaching computational biology and developing open tools for the scientific community. His lab was recognized as a SIB Remarkable Output in 2023, highlighting its impact in bioinformatics.
