Evangelos I. Kaisar is a Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering at Florida Atlantic University . He also serves as the Executive Director of the Freight Mobility Research Institute (FMRI) and Multimodal Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory (MITSL) . His academic and research leadership includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, securing substantial federal and state funding, and advancing transportation resilience and logistics through applied research. Education: Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, University of Maryland at College Park M.S. in Civil Engineering, University of Maryland at College Park B.S. in Civil Engineering, University of Maryland at College Park Research Interests: Dr. Kaisar specializes in logistics and transportation system design , with a focus on transportation security and efficiency , traffic modeling, simulation, and safety , and freight logistics . His work integrates engineering principles with disaster risk reduction and public health considerations, addressing challenges in emergency preparedness and infrastructure resilience. Recent Publications Trends: His 2016 publications highlight critical aspects of transportation resilience, including reliability-based recovery center placement and the impact of infectious disease outbreaks on urban traffic systems. These studies emphasize data-driven approaches, emergency response optimization, and interdisciplinary applications to mitigate risks in freight and urban mobility. Grants and Funding: Dr. Kaisar has secured over $13.6 million in career research funding , including a USDOT Tier 1 University Transportation Center grant for FMRI ($10.5 million, 2016-2022). His portfolio includes projects on transit signal priority, port resiliency, and multi-hazard mitigation planning, supported by agencies like FDOT, DHS, FEMA, and the Federal Transit Administration. Labs and Research Sites: As Executive Director of FMRI and MITSL , Dr. Kaisar leads research initiatives in freight mobility, intelligent transportation systems, and disaster-resilient infrastructure. These labs serve as hubs for simulation modeling, logistics analysis, and applied innovation in urban and intermodal transportation. Advising and Mentorship: He has chaired 32 M.S. and 2 Ph.D. theses at FAU, with 26 M.S. graduates and 6 ongoing students. Dr. Kaisar has also supervised 16 students on thesis/dissertation committees, 5 in directed research, and 25 undergraduate volunteers. His international mentorship includes 10 students from institutions in the Netherlands, India, Brazil, and Chile.
