Dr. Sophie C. Cox is an Associate Professor in Healthcare Technologies at the University of Birmingham's School of Chemical Engineering, affiliated with the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI). Her research focuses on innovating medical devices through advanced manufacturing and biomaterials to improve patient outcomes. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2013) and BEng in Engineering (2010) from the University of Warwick. Her work integrates chemical synthesis, additive manufacturing, and formulation engineering to address clinical challenges such as infection prevention and tissue regeneration. Dr. Cox's research interests span biomaterials science, additive manufacturing, and translational healthcare technologies. She collaborates across disciplines including chemical engineering, biomedical science, and computer science through the HTI. Her team develops customized implants, anti-infective medical devices, and therapies leveraging cell-derived nanoparticles. She leads undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Chemical Engineering and supervises PhD/MSc students. Her work emphasizes collaboration with clinicians and industry to accelerate research into clinical applications. Current projects include modifying implants to reduce infection risks, designing controlled therapeutic delivery systems, and analyzing bone-cartilage interfaces using advanced imaging techniques. Dr. Cox chairs the Postgraduate Student Staff Committee and actively mentors early-career researchers. Lab affiliations include the Tissue Regeneration and Interface Lab (TRAILab) and the HTI. She is also engaged in expanding research opportunities via collaborations nationally and internationally.
