Jiawei Yang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), with an affiliation to the Biomedical Engineering Department. He joined WPI in 2024 after completing postdoctoral research at MIT and Boston Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on developing bio-interactive implant systems to enhance implantable therapeutics, integrating material design, implant mechanics, and bio-interaction control. Key projects include bioadhesive implants, anti-biofouling coatings, and deep-tissue bioelectronics.
Yang holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University (2019), an M.S. from Harvard (2016), and a B.E. and D.Eng. in Engineering Mechanics from Tongji University (2009, 2015). His work addresses challenges in implant longevity, tissue compatibility, and real-time bio-sensing. He leads the Yang Research Group, which develops modular bioadhesive systems to improve patient outcomes through safer, longer-lasting implants.
Notable awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2025), WPI James Nichols Heald Startup Award (2024), and the Robert L. Wallace Prize Fellowship (2015). His lab focuses on advancing hydrogel adhesives and anti-fouling coatings, with applications in cardiovascular and orthopedic implants. Collaborations emphasize translating lab innovations into clinical solutions.
