Sara Ek is a Professor and Deputy Head of Department at the Department of Immunotechnology within the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) at Lund University. She serves as Principal Investigator at the Lund University Cancer Centre (LUCC), Director of Create Health, and is a Researcher in the eSSENCE: The e-Science Collaboration. Her academic profile demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing cancer research, particularly in lymphoid malignancies. Dr. Ek's research program, "Cancer Target Group– molecular and functional analysis in lymphoid proliferative disorders," focuses on finding biological solutions to clinically important questions involving improved diagnosis, stratification, and treatment of lymphoma patients. Recognizing that cancer heterogeneity presents a major challenge to successful treatment, her team develops tools to capture this heterogeneity and identify variations in tumor-related signaling pathways and interactions with the immune microenvironment. This work involves close collaboration with clinicians to perform advanced molecular investigations using sequencing, spatial omics technologies, serum protein profiling, and functional screening of patient materials from clinical trials. Her publication record reveals a consistent trajectory of impactful research in lymphoma, particularly mantle cell lymphoma, with groundbreaking work on the SOX11 transcription factor as a diagnostic biomarker. More recently, her research has expanded into spatial analysis of tumor immune microenvironments across different cancer types, including ovarian cancer. This evolution demonstrates her ability to leverage emerging technologies to address complex questions in cancer biology. Active Projects: A cellular and molecular dissection of the lymphoma tumor immune microenvironment to understand and address treatment resistances (2025-2028) MULTIPLY: MULITlayer Predictive models for relapsed MCL after ibrutinib as first line therapy (2024-2027) Primary ibrutinib resistance in mantle cell lymphoma – translational immuno-oncology investigations (2024-2026) Dr. Ek manages the SpatialOmics@LU infrastructure facility and has organized multiple scientific events including the LUCC Immunology minisymposium on digital spatial profiling in February 2024, demonstrating her leadership in both research and academic community building.
