Som Niyogi is an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan's Toxicology Program within the College of Arts & Science. He also serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Biology at York University, Toronto. His research focuses on the physiological and neurobehavioral effects of environmental contaminants in aquatic organisms, with expertise in metal bioavailability, ecological risk assessment, and transgenerational toxicity. Dr. Niyogi has been recognized with the 2023 College of Arts & Science Distinguished Scholar RSAW Award. His academic roles include teaching courses such as Environmental Toxicology and Physiological Toxicology . Current research integrates organismic physiology, behavioral ecology, and molecular biology to study contaminant impacts on aquatic species. Notable projects investigate arsenic's effects on zebrafish development and the neurobehavioral consequences of microplastics and bisphenol compounds. Dr. Niyogi has supervised over 40 graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom continue in academic or industry roles. His lab collaborates on biomonitoring of Arctic metal pollution and epigenetic mechanisms of transgenerational toxicity. Key funding sources include grants addressing industrial metal pollution and air quality impacts on human health. Publications span over 200 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on metal toxicity, neurobehavioral effects, and ecological risk assessment. Recent work includes studies on PFAS neurotoxicity and selenium's role in arsenic toxicity mitigation.
