Ieva Nokalna-Spale serves as an Acting Assistant in the Department of Paediatrics and Department of Biology and Microbiology at Rīga Stradiņš University in Latvia. Her research focuses on pediatric infectious diseases, particularly the diagnostic approaches and management of febrile children in emergency settings across Europe through the PERFORM consortium (Personalised Risk assessment in febrile children to optimise Real-life Management across the European Union). Her research interests center on improving diagnostic accuracy for differentiating bacterial from viral infections in children, optimizing antibiotic stewardship, and developing clinical prediction models for serious bacterial infections. She has made significant contributions to understanding procalcitonin use, host protein signatures, and antimicrobial prescribing patterns in pediatric emergency care across multiple European countries. Nokalna-Spale's publication record shows consistent output since 2018, with a notable increase in 2023-2025, including articles in high-impact journals such as The Lancet Digital Health, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Archives of Disease in Childhood. Her work demonstrates a clear trajectory toward developing evidence-based approaches for managing febrile children while addressing antimicrobial resistance concerns. Her research has received attention across academic platforms, with multiple publications garnering Mendeley readership and social media mentions, particularly her work on antimicrobial stewardship challenges which was referenced in policy discussions. As an active member of the PERFORM consortium, she collaborates with researchers across Europe to address critical gaps in pediatric infectious disease management, with her work directly contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 (Reducing child mortality through improved clinical medicine).
