Gareth Thompson is a Research Fellow at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast. He specializes in improving cardiac patient and carer outcomes through co-designed interventions, with a focus on coronary artery disease, heart failure, and student nurse education. Thompson chairs the Cardiac Research Group, emphasizing Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) across research projects. He teaches Essential Life Sciences and Foundations of Pharmacology to Year 1 Nursing undergraduates and hosts weekly seminars for postgraduate cardiac PhD students. His supervisory role includes assisting in guiding an international PhD student in Chronic Illness & Palliative Care. Thompson has extensive expertise in study methodologies including pilot trials, randomized controlled trials, and implementation science. He has received multiple nominations for MHLS Postdoctoral Awards (2023-2024) and secured the QUB Agility Fund Strand 4 in 2025 for research impact. His peer-review activities span journals such as BMJ Open, Open Heart, and Journal of Sports Sciences, reflecting his interdisciplinary engagement. His research projects include ASMOSUS (improving nursing students' cardiovascular risk assessment), CABIN (post-STEMI patient support), and HELP (heart failure carer support programs). Thompson actively promotes PPI in research and has contributed to public engagement activities like the INCA Annual Scientific Meeting and the QUB Cardiac Research Group Annual Heart Health Conference.
