Patrick Charbonneau is a Professor of Physics at Duke University, associated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and Director of Graduate Studies for the University Program in Materials Science and Engineering at the Pratt School of Engineering. His research focuses on soft matter physics, particularly the glass transition, protein crystallization, and colloidal assembly. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University (2006) and a B.S. from McGill University (2001). His work combines theoretical frameworks and computational simulations to explore complex systems, including dynamical heterogeneity, jamming transitions, and structural glasses. Key contributions include studies on hard sphere systems, high-dimensional models, and the application of statistical mechanics to biological systems like protein assembly. Charbonneau has secured grants from prestigious institutions such as the National Science Foundation and the University of Chicago. His awards include the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2013) and the NSF CAREER Award (2011). He actively participates in academic service, including organizing international conferences and serving on editorial boards.
