Dr. James Hodkinson is a Reader (senior associate professor) in German at the University of Warwick’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures, with a focus on German culture from the 18th century to the present. He has held positions at UK and Irish universities since 1996, with visiting roles at Monash University, Stockholm University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. His academic roles include Head of German Studies (2017–19), Director of Recruitment and Admissions (2020–23), and future Faculty Public Engagement Lead (Arts) from 2025. BA (Dunelm) First Class Honours (1996) PhD (Trinity College Dublin) (2001) PGCE (Liverpool) with Distinction in Pedagogical Theory (2002) James specializes in Germanophone culture, with research intersecting Islamic studies, postsecular modernity, Romanticism, sound studies, and gender constructions. His work explores cultural representations of Islam, the 'sonic turn' in humanities, and 18th–19th century German intellectual history. He founded the Occident-Orient Research Network (2010–14) and co-founded the German Pop Music Studies network (2016), integrating public engagement into academia via projects like 'Re-imagining Islam' and 'Waswasa.' His 15 most recent articles span Islamic kinships in Lessing/Novalis, postsecularism, transnational German studies, sound installations, and historical representations of Islam. Themes include interfaith dialogue, colonial narratives, and cultural co-production with communities. Projects include 'Waswasa: Whispers in Prayer' (Leverhulme Fellowship, 2024–25), 'Together/Apart' (Partition/Displacement), and 'Re-imagining Islam' (community-focused outreach). He collaborates with Soul City Arts, fostering arts-academia-community partnerships.
