Savannah Cox

Dr. Savannah Cox serves as Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the School of Geography and Planning, University of Sheffield since 2023, following her role as Lecturer of Human Geography at Loughborough University. She also holds an Associate Editor position at C40 Cities' Journal of City Climate Policy & Economy.

Her academic foundation includes a PhD in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, where her dissertation examined finance's role in Miami's large-scale adaptation projects. This research established her interdisciplinary trajectory across urban studies, planning, and human geography.

Dr. Cox's work critically investigates urban climate governance through three interconnected lenses: financial systems' influence on resilience infrastructure, climate justice movements' urban claims-making, and the racial reconfigurations inherent in adaptation planning. Her fieldwork spans Miami, New York, New Orleans, and the Bay Area, consistently revealing how financial mechanisms like bond ratings govern climate risk while intersecting with racial formations.

Her publications (2020-2025) demonstrate methodological rigor in analyzing resilience's temporal dimensions, affective politics, and design turn. Key patterns include Miami-focused case studies exposing finance-climate entanglements, theoretical innovations merging STS with critical race perspectives, and empirical examinations of insurance markets' role in urban climate governance.

Supported by National Science Foundation grants and recognized through Association of European Schools of Planning nominations, Dr. Cox bridges academic research with public discourse as a former journalist contributing to Salon and The New Republic.
