CAPT. Sean P. Tortora is a Professor of Marine Transportation at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), serving since 2012. He holds a Master of Science in International Transportation Management and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Marine Transportation from SUNY Maritime College. His professional licenses include USCG Master endorsements for Steam/Motor Vessels, Towing Vessels, and Underway Replenishment Vessels, along with certifications in Dynamic Positioning, Dangerous Goods Handling, and Small Arms Instruction. Education: M.S., International Transportation Management, SUNY Maritime College (Ft. Schuyler) B.S., Business Administration in Marine Transportation, SUNY Maritime College (Ft. Schuyler) Research & Teaching Interests: Focuses on maritime safety and operational efficiency, including Marine Firefighting, Towing and Salvage Operations, Underway Replenishment, and Bridge Resource Management. He also explores the Jones Act’s impact on U.S. maritime logistics and the towing industry’s technical challenges. Publications: Authored the Study Guide for Marine Fire Prevention, Firefighting, and Fire Safety (Cornell Maritime Press, 2017), a foundational text for maritime safety protocols. Other Expertise: Serves as a USCG Designated Examiner, GMDSS Operator, and Fast Rescue Boat Operator. His military background includes STCW 95 compliance training and Naval Logistics roles.
