Bryan McCloskey serves as Department Chair and Warren & Katharine Schlinger Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, with a joint appointment as Faculty Engineer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division. His research program explores electrochemical solutions for energy sustainability through advanced battery technologies. Professor McCloskey's research focuses on fundamental and applied electrochemistry, with particular emphasis on: Next-generation solid-state battery architectures Metal-air battery systems for high-energy applications Fast-charging protocols for Li-ion batteries Low-temperature electrolyte formulations Earth-abundant cathode materials development Electrochemical characterization techniques His recent publications demonstrate strong focus on battery materials innovation, with 2022-2023 research addressing: degradation mechanisms during fast charging, lithium plating quantification, cation-disordered cathode materials, and electrolyte engineering for extreme temperature operation. This work consistently advances fundamental understanding of electrochemical processes while developing practical solutions for energy storage challenges. Professor McCloskey has received significant recognition for his research contributions: Charles W. Tobias Young Investigator Award (2020) Scialog Fellow in Advanced Energy Storage (2017) Mellichamp Distinguished Lecturer, Georgia Tech (2017) NSF CAREER Award (2017) BASF/Volkswagen Science Award Electrochemistry (2015) ISE Early Career Analytical Electrochemistry Prize (2015) He leads the McCloskey Lab, which maintains active research programs in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. The lab develops novel characterization techniques and collaborates extensively with national laboratories and industry partners to translate fundamental discoveries into practical energy solutions.
