Michaël Lalancette is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). He joined UQAM in December 2023 after completing an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on statistical modeling of dependence structures, particularly in extreme value theory and copulas, with applications in multivariate and spatial extremes. He develops methodologies for detecting asymptotic independence and estimating graphical models for extremal dependence, especially in high-dimensional settings. His work combines theoretical statistics with computational methods for real-world applications in environmental and spatial statistics. The recent publications reflect a strong trend in extreme value modeling , graphical models for extremes , and rank-based and adaptive estimation methods . His work bridges theoretical developments with practical applications in spatial extremes and high-dimensional data. He is the organizer of the STATQAM Statistics research seminar and has served as a reviewer for top journals such as the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B , Biometrika , and Extremes . He has also contributed to academic service through graduate student union leadership and event organization at the Fields Institute. His research is supported by competitive grants from NSERC and FRQNT, and he is actively building a research group focused on statistical extremes and graphical modeling.
