Laura Mertes is an Associate Fellow at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF), operating within the Research Group Science for Nuclear Diplomacy under the Research Department International Security. Her position integrates scientific expertise with international security policy frameworks to advance nuclear disarmament initiatives. Her academic foundation includes: Bachelor of Science in Physics from Technical University of Darmstadt (2010-2014) Master of Science in Physics from Technical University of Darmstadt (2014-2017) Doctorate in Physics from Technical University of Darmstadt (2018-2024) Dr. Mertes specializes in nuclear archaeology—a discipline applying forensic scientific methods to historical nuclear materials and activities—to verify compliance with non-proliferation treaties and reconstruct past nuclear programs. Her work bridges particle physics, historical analysis, and arms control verification, directly supporting diplomatic efforts through empirical evidence. This research contributes to critical gaps in understanding undeclared nuclear activities and treaty adherence. As part of PRIF's Science for Nuclear Diplomacy group, she collaborates with interdisciplinary teams examining emerging verification technologies and historical case studies. The group interfaces with international bodies like the IAEA and UN disarmament forums, translating technical findings into policy-relevant frameworks for nuclear security governance.
