Christine Jurene Orillo Bacal is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the UWA Medical School and UWA Centre for Ear Science at The University of Western Australia. She is also a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Ear Science Institute Australia, where she develops biomaterials for targeted drug delivery in patients suffering from middle ear infections (otitis media). Her educational background includes: PhD in Medicine from Deakin University (awarded February 2024), focusing on Developing Haemodialysis Membrane Materials for Acetaminophen Capture Master of Science in Biochemistry from University of the Philippines - Diliman (awarded June 2018), focusing on Identification of Glycosyl Hydrolases from a Mangrove-Dwelling Fomitopsis sp. Isolate Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of the Philippines - Diliman (awarded April 2014), focusing on In vitro Screening of Philippine Medicinal Plants for Anti-Psoriatic Activity Dr. Bacal's research focuses on the development of advanced biomaterials for medical applications. Her work spans multiple disciplines including materials science, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering. She has developed biocompatible filtration membranes for capturing paracetamol in overdose cases and is currently working on biomaterials for targeted drug delivery in otitis media treatment. Her research leverages novel materials like MXenes for various medical applications including drug delivery systems, hemodialysis membranes, and wearable medical devices. Her publication record demonstrates expertise in membrane technology, surface chemistry, and biomaterials. Her recent work explores the application of MXene materials in medical contexts, including drug delivery systems, hemodialysis membranes, and wearable electronics for medical applications. She has published in high-impact journals covering topics from molecularly imprinted membranes to MXene-reinforced biomaterials. Her scientific contributions align with several UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being. Dr. Bacal has collaborated with researchers across multiple institutions including Deakin University, University of the Philippines, and international collaborators as evidenced by her publication record. Her work has been cited multiple times and has attracted attention from news outlets and academic platforms.
