Professor Eva Pongracz serves as Professor of Energy Systems and Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu, where she leads the Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Group. Her work focuses on carbon-neutral energy systems, smart grids, digitalization, 6G, AI, and distributed systems with specific attention to Nordic climate challenges and social sustainability. Her educational background includes a D.Sc.(Tech.), Dr.Univ., Lic.Sc.(Tech.), and M.Sc.(Tech.), earned through studies in Budapest following her early education in Czechoslovakia, before relocating to Finland post-Velvet Revolution. Research interests encompass sustainability, sustainable energy, energy transition, circular economy, environmental justice, variable energy production, environmental technology, sustainable production methods, and waste management. Her work emphasizes holistic integration of environmental services (energy, water, waste) and addresses Arctic-specific climate challenges where impacts are amplified, advocating for resource efficiency through systemic solutions. Professor Pongracz actively supervises master's and doctoral theses while securing competitive research funding for projects including: Solutions for transition: Fair and flexible energy system (Flaire) Integrating hydrogen and nuclear in the future sustainable energy system (HYDRA) Climate neutral, justified and sustainable H2 transition Energy- and cost-efficient production of solar energy under arctic environmental conditions Solar hydrogen unit as part of versatile energy production, consumption and storage system Geoenergy Leap Heat Battery – Utilization of industrial side streams for sustainable energy storage Carbon footprint of the University of Oulu Modern villages Blue Circular Nets Energy-wise Port These initiatives target Nordic-specific energy solutions and circular economy implementation. The Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Group she directs develops carbon-neutral energy frameworks with special consideration for northern communities' small-scale infrastructure needs, decentralized energy solutions, and Arctic regional development challenges where climate change impacts are disproportionately severe.
