Maria Senena Corbalan Garcia is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Murcia (UMU), affiliated with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on membrane-interacting proteins and their roles in cellular processes like ion fluxes, proliferation, and signal integration, particularly in diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration. She leads the Biomembranes research group and has published extensively in membrane biology and protein-lipid interactions. Prof. Corbalán holds administrative roles as Vice-Rector for Research at UMU since 2022, previously serving as Vice-Rector for Internationalisation (2018–2020) and combined Research & Internationalisation roles (2020–2022). She actively participates in European academic initiatives, including leading UMU's membership in the EUniWell Alliance and representing Spain in CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment). Her research explores proteins such as Ca2+-ATPase, SOS, Ras, PKC isoforms, and potassium channels, investigating their interactions with lipids and membranes. Recent work emphasizes PKC's role in breast cancer signaling, mast cell secretory processes, and KIR+ T lymphocyte immunosurveillance. She has pioneered studies on vitamin K membrane localization and edelfosine's anticancer mechanisms. Prof. Corbalán's academic trajectory includes a doctoral thesis on ATPase structure (1995, UMU) and over 20 years of contributions to lipid-regulated protein function. Her work bridges biochemical fundamentals with translational applications in health and disease.
